Dr. William Kaufold, a current Mansfield Town Council member, is running for re-election as an independent candidate.

According to The Chronicle, Kaufold was appointed by the council on Aug. 12 to fill the vacancy left by former independent councilwoman Caitlin Briody’s resignation ahead of her move to Chicago.

Dr. Kaufold, who was voted in unanimously by the council, will have served as a council member for three months by the time the newly-elected council meets again on Nov. 12, should he be re-elected.

Kaufold did not respond to requests for comment.

According to his campaign’s official Facebook page, “Bill Kaufold for Mansfield Town Council,” Kaufold believes his position as the only current council member not affiliated with either major political party is important.

“The citizens of Mansfield felt that it was important to have an independent voice on Town Council and we hope that our community continues to recognize the significance of this inclusion,” the “About” section of the campaign’s Facebook page reads. “As an independent, Bill is interested in preserving our neighborhoods and exploring options to allow for members of all ages from our community to engage, interact, and thrive.”

Dr. Kaufold also serves as an opthamologist based out of Willimantic and is affiliated with Windham Hospital.
