It was another fantastic week of college football with a top five matchup and two stunning upsets as we roll into Week 3.
The game of the week came in Saturday night’s showdown between top-ranked Ohio State and No. 4 Texas. This game had everything from the start with the Buckeyes jumping out to a commanding 20-3 lead going into the half. Everyone thought it was over until Arch Manning heated up in the fourth quarter to lead Texas scoring 21 unanswered points for the comeback win and claim the nation’s top ranking.
Ohio State would fall to No. 6 after their first 1-1 start since 2021.
Oklahoma State claimed the other major storyline of the week taking down previous No. 6 Oregon 39-31. The Cowboys secured their new Head Coach, Eric Morris’ first victory and celebrated with a proper field storming.
This victory was one to remember as the Cowboys went through a rough 1-11 season last year leading to the firing of longtime coach Mike Gundy.
The loss for Oregon sent them 15 spots south placing them at No. 21 in this week’s poll.
The other top 25 upset came from Michigan proving everyone wrong after their Week 1 scare against Western Michigan, defeating No. 11 Oklahoma. Their tough schedule continues as they are set to take on five more ranked opponents down the road.
Looking ahead to Week 3, teams look to continue their winning ways and separate themselves from the pack.
Three top 25 matchups take place this weekend with No. 22 Houston and No.13 Texas Tech kicking things off in a Friday night showdown.
They already have a common opponent in Oregon State, with Houston handling them at home, while Texas Tech came from behind late on the road scoring 14 in the fourth quarter.
History is on Tech’s side as they won 12 of the last 13 meetings, including a home winning streak that dates back to 1990.
On Saturday, No. 16 Southern Methodist University, and No. 23 Louisville faceoff in an ACC matchup both coming off easy wins against FCS opponents. Louisville fell to Ole Miss in week one after a last second field goal lifted the Rebels past the Cardinals.
It will be a must-win for both sides hoping to make the ACC championship this year with every ACC opponent carrying significant implications.
The third and final matchup comes in the top 10 with the game of the week as Lane Kiffin makes his return to Hollingsworth Field, but wearing the opposing colors.
No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Ole Miss have not faced each other in a top 10 matchup since 1962, and it could not be a better way to do it.
After Kiffin’s awkward departure from the Rebels last season, fans will have plenty to cheer for, or in this case “boo”, in this weekend’s game as they give their previous coach a not-so-warm return.
The stage is set with two high-end quarterbacks both throwing for over 550 yards after two weeks, including Trinidad Chambliss already connected for five touchdowns.
This season has already handed us some remarkable matchups as teams that seemed unstoppable in August are suddenly moral.
The underdogs came out to play and showed there is no guaranteed win when it comes to suiting up under the college lights.
No championship is won in September, but plenty of seasons begin to disappear. Week 3 is where the real pressure starts to build, and the stars come out to play.
