The University Senate voted in 1974 to recommend that the university terminate its contract with the Follett Corporation, who operated the UConn bookstore at the time.

Of 373 faculty members surveyed, 51 percent had an unfavorable opinion of the Follett bookstore.

The senate’s recommendation also suggested that the Board of Trustees find “an alternative plan that places the scholarly and financial needs of the academic community as primary,” the Daily Campus reported.

The recommendation was submitted by John A. Pappanikou, chairman of the Student Welfare Committee and a professor of educational psychology.
