March is Women’s History Month and the University of Connecticut is celebrating in some big ways, with multiple student organizations hosting a myriad of events celebrating women. So with this month being all about female empowerment, why not celebrate the ladies the best way we know how: Drinking cocktails in support of feminism and our most inspirational heroines.

Mind the (Wage) Gap

This drink brings attention to the issues women face everyday and have been fighting to change. On average, women make $0.79 to every man’s dollar for the same job and work, even less for women of color. This drink is a subtle reminder of systemic oppression and institutions of power, and also serves a powerful, citrusy punch to boot.

Ingredients:

1 ½ oz gin

½ oz ginger beer

½ oz orange bitters

½ oz lemon juice

To prepare, shake all ingredients and double-strain before pouring into a glass. Serve on ice and garnish with lemon rind or zest.

Intersectionality on the Beach

Also known as “Consensual Sex on the Beach,” this drink celebrates female identity and sexuality. Ladies should be all about making smart, expressive, empowered, independent decisions this month in support of feminism and other strong women. The recipe is simple enough, but the complex flavors of Intersectionality on the Beach remind us that we all have complex identities and different backgrounds and stories to share and learn from.

Ingredients:

1 ½ oz vodka

½ peach schnapps

1 ½ oz cranberry juice

1 ½ orange juice

Combine cold juice with vodka and schnapps, stir and enjoy. Little umbrella optional!

Rosé the Riveter

This one is simple yet inspirational.

Ingredients:

Your favorite rosé

Pour until needed, or until you get Rosie’s biceps, whichever comes first.

Tequila Patriarchy Smasher

Again, this one is straightforward.

Ingredients:

Salt

1 ½ oz tequila

1 slice of lime

Take the shot, crush societal expectations.

Long Island Iced Equalitea

Women are constantly fighting for equality and equal rights, especially when it comes to representation. Women are still fighting for the right to choose and pushing for equal representation in political bodies. Less than 15 percent of leadership positions in Fortune 500 companies are held by women. We’ve got a long way until equalitea. Full disclaimer: This is just a regular Long Island Iced Tea, but it’ll taste a little sweeter knowing you’re drinking it in an effort to support ‘equali-tea’ during Women’s History Month.

Ingredients:

1 oz vodka

1 oz gin

1 oz white rum

1 oz tequila

½ oz Triple Sec

2 tbs freshly squeezed lemon juice

½ cup of cola (to taste)

Lemon wedges for garnish

To make, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour the vodka, gin, rum, tequila, Triple Sec and lemon juice into the shaker. Cover and shake vigorously to combine and chill. Pour the mixture, ice and all, into two glasses and top off with the cola. Garnish with lemon wedges. Please enjoy responsibly!
